Atari 2600 at 50

I got my old Atari working on my TV. I see your Ace Combat 6 and raise you Radar Lock!

Finally got the old 2600 working on my 50" TV. Turns out I had the right adapter the whole time just had some issues with the old VCR it was going through. Some of the old games don't work, and some of the old controllers don't work either but still. Nerdtastic.

Suska IP-core v.2K8A soon to be released

German developer Wolfgang Förster who is wokring with reproducing an Atari STe through FPGA reports that a new test release of their software will soon be available.

In current condition it is possible to boot up TOS 1.0 as well as EmuTOS, reaching a working TOS desktop. According to Wolfgang it seems like all of the desktops functions are working nicely, but unfortunately the disk support is not working yet.

The planned test release will be offered to the public since Wolfgang and the other developers hopes to reach interested people who can help with testing, suggestions and tracing of bugs and other problems. It is believed that most of the remaining problems are related to the CPU implementation. Read more on the homepage of the Suska project:

Mod of the week - Multi-platform portable

My mod pick this week is a multi-platform portable built by John Grayson, aka “Bacteria”.

The deal with this portable is that the controls, screen and battery are “general purpose” and work with any system. Then, to play a specific system, you plug a “module” onto the back, such as a Nintendo 64, or PlayStation.

There’s a good demonstration of this in his video, you can see that and the rest of the project using the link below. Good work John!

Rob’s Video Game Reviews: Xenophobe (Atari, Lynx, 1990)

When I first played Xenophobe on the NES in my youth, I found it to be a fairly middling action game. The same eight levels cycled over and over again, and none of them involved much more than blowing up a lot of aliens. That’s fun as far as it goes, but it does get boring pretty quickly. So when I found out that the version of Xenophobe on the unfortunate Atari Lynx handheld was different, I figured that that would only extend to the number of levels. Instead, what I got was a pretty pleasant experience.

Xenophobe is a very transparent knockoff of the Alien franchise. Earth was long ago taken over by an evil race of aliens known as Xenos, and now they’ve taken over all of the space stations and lunar bases surrounding Terra, humanity’s second home. It’s up to a team of specialists to exterminate the threat before the Xenos can make landfall and send us into extinction. They’ll have to make their way through 22 bases before they can travel to the moon that the queen mother of the aliens is housed inside and cut the head off of the hive.

Atari Blog Mention

Kaboom has to be the best atari game ever created! Andy Cunningham and I spent nearly 3 hours tonight playing some of the crappiest games ever created for human beings to enjoy. To list a few of the worst... Adventure, Qbert, Mash. Some of the best.... Frogger, Kaboom, Pac-Man. I love spending time with buddies doing nothing but stupid crap. Through the gameage tonight there was great conversations and encouragement. Always a plus. I want to at some point purchase some old game systems to bust out and enjoy from time to time. Remember Nintendo "Jaws"?... CLASSIC.
