Freak-out Mode
An appropriate name for this weird screen. The Freak-Out Mode is a screen created by Steve Ryno and Scott Williamson. In it, the title screen goes crazy and you can play around with some of the sounds found in the game. To access this hidden screen, here's what you do: When the moving title screen comes on, reset the game (or at the "Continue?" screen, after the first "beep" of the countdown, and while the timer still shows a 9, press UP and OPTION 1 at the same time, and hold them). The screen should go black for a second. Upon seeing the black screen, immediately push UP on the joypad and hold down the OPTION 1 button. Keep holding and pushing on the controls till the title screen plays through one round on it's intro. When the credits finish, the screen should begin to 'freak-out.' To listen to some of the digitized sounds in the game, push up, down, left or right on the joypad. Pressing DOWN and LEFT repeatedly will cause the samples to descend in pitch, while pressing UP and RIGHT repeatedly will make them ascend in pitch. Once the new demo begins, release UP and OPTION 1. Then use pad to sample sounds. OPTION 2 turns the music off. This really helps if you want to here what the sounds are like. To leave the 'Freak-out Mode,' just push the A or B button.
Programmers' Screen Want to see what the programmer's of this game look like? Start the game and kill yourself four times (that's all the lifes you have!). You see your fourth character jump up into the air when dieing, immediately hold down OPTION 1 and push up on the joypad. Keep holding the button and pad all the way through the count-down timer for restarting. When the timer runs out, the screen will go black and have a tiny grey dot in it's center. Remember Slime World's Zit War and how you have to quickly push the A and B buttons to make the bubble bigger? The same rules apply here as well. As you push the A and B buttons, the dot will become bigger and a digitized picture of the programmers' will start to appear. If you keep pushing the A and B buttons until the digitized picture is as big as the screen, it will explode, ending the game.
* Both of these secrets came from Steve Ryno, former Atari Programmer and past friend / contact.
